Dear
Foster Mom,
As one mom to another, thank you and congratulations. Compared to you
humans, motherhood was easy for me. You take us into your house and
heart, teach us to trust and socialize, show us how and when to toilet.
You nurse us physically and emotionally usually during the most
difficult periods of our lives.
You find docs (o.k. vets) and hairdressers (o.k. groomers) for us. You
teach us how to interact with other dogs (and other pets) and other
humans. And then, when we're just about perfect in your estimate, you
stand on your front porch and wave bye as we leave with humans you
trust to love us as much as you have.
My experience indicates that this is, basically, what you humans do
with your children (pups). How wonderful are moms! And how wonderful
are those humans--male and female--who willingly and enthusiastically
embrace the role of "FOSTER MOM".
Thank you, God bless you, and Happy Mother's Day.

Hi Jean,
I hope to enclose a couple of photos of Maxie and
Vera. She
is
still adjusting especially since we don't have a lot of people stopping
by and she still does her share of barking when they do especially with
the male species. But she had her second hair cut yesterday
and
as I knew Brian was the man for her. Brian said she didn't
bark
and sat so good on the table, people coming in was amazed in how he
could get her to set so well. The toe nail trimming was ok,
she
got a little nervous with her back nails but he took his time and
talked her through it.
The most fantastic thing is that I forgot about her thunderstorm pills
and didn't give her any before the bath and hair cut. No
problems. She jumped into the front seat of the wagon and
wanted
to sit on my lap coming home and I told her she had to sit on the floor
or her seat and she figured out how to get into the back seat and sit
on the floor.
She is getting a little bolder in relations to the kitchen and the
noises that come from that area. When she meets the vet, I
think
I will do the same thing have Maxie, the vet and maybe the tech work
with her while I sit outside.
She is a funny little dog and typical of the Shih Tzu at times they can
be demanding. She enjoys going to Mom's bedroom when I go to
bed
but usually goes to the living room or underneath Mom's bed sometimes
during the night. Last night with her new haircut she spent
the
night on top of the bed. She is quite funny; because when her
hair is long, her tail doesn't bother her but now it is short (which we
notice in the past) her tail seems to tickle her as much to say what is
this. Plus she wanted to go out for a walk today, until she
realized she didn't have her fur coat and there was puddles needless to
say heaven help any Shih Tzu and they get their feet wet!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jean,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but thought I'd write and let you
know we made it back home safe and sound.
Boomer did great on the trip back home.... had no problems with him in
the car. He is still adapting to his new home but has come
along
even in the one day since he has been here. The first night we got back
he came in the house, found Hawkeye's bed and curled up in it and
didn't move the rest of the night. I don't know if he did
this
for you or if it is common but he wouldn't even come out of the bed for
treats and when we came down to his level to pet him he would start
growling. We did get him however to go up to bed with
Nathan....
he seemed to attach himself to Nate... and he did well the whole night
through. He isn't growling anymore... he has been following
us
around the house and really gets excited when it's time to go outside.
He hasn't really been eating much but is drinking his water
well.
Last night he curled up with me on the couch and slept with
me through
the night as Nate works 3rd shift and he slept good. I think
the
whole new surroundings were a little overwhelming for him the first day
but he has been walking around and checking things out.
The cats are getting adjusted to the new guy in the house...
Reebock
hissed at him and then walked away, Smoke just kind of lays on the
chair and watched him and surprisingly Nike (our timid cat) has been
out and about watching Boomer but she keeps her distance also. When we
brought Merlin home, Nike stayed in the laundry room for about 3 days
before she ventured out... she came out to eat but that was about it
until she got to get used to Merlin, so this was a big leap for
her. Boomer tries and gets close to them but they still
aren't
sure about him yet.
He has been just a little angel and we love him.
On the funny side, he started talking to me when I sat down at the
computer... LOL
Thank you so much again for bringing him into our lives.... he will be
an important part in our family for years to come.
I will send you some pictures of him soon ok?

Well
we have had Tanner for two months now, and I have to thank you both for
him. He has become such an important part of our lives, and
gives
us so much joy.
My husband retired last week, so now he has both of us to spoil him,
and he loves every minute of it. He likes to go for
walks,
and is getting quite playful. He has filled out a lot, and has gotten
quite muscular across his chest.
He even has a little girl friend two doors down. She's a cute little
basset hound, and seems to be quite smitten with him also. You ought to
see him prance around out in the yard when she is out.
Just thought I would let you know how much we are enjoying him, and he
certainly does have a forever home.

Hi
Pandora!
Okay, we're doing it again. I have been thinking for the past
two
weeks that I should e-mail to let you know how we are doing.
Your
e-mail motivated me.
Snuffy is healthy (no more ear infections, knock on wood) and a much
loved member of the family over here. He just slid into our
routines, especially at bedtime and the morning. He lays on
one
of the boys' beds when we read at night and sleeps the entire night in
my bed with me. Lately, he has moved from the foot of my bed
to
the pillow next to me! In the morning, he is often the
Snuffy alarm for the boys. We now know that Snuffy is a very
appropriate name for him. He jumps up, puts his head by the
boys'
and "snuffles" which helps me wake them up. The boys love
him, as
do I.
He got his first grooming with us on Valentine's Day. I was
surprised at how much difference the hair makes on Shih Tzu.
He
came back, looking about half as small as I thought he was! I
have kept the same style because I love how he looks with long ears and
a long tail. Next time, I think I will tell the
groomer not quite so short on the body.
He will be coming with us next week to my sister's in WI (she is very
excited about meeting him). She has a little female Shih Tzu
rescued from a breeding mill named Dee Dee and terrier mix rescued from
a shelter down south. Bert, the terrier, is very high energy
and
Dee Dee is very shy, being a breeder for
the first 5 years of her life. Snuffy is a little intimidated
by
the big neighbor dogs he has met so it will be interesting to see how
he does with Bert and Dee Dee. My sister has a digital camera
so
we will try to get a couple of pics of Snuffy to e-mail to you while we
are there.
He is such a good dog Pandora. It's very easy to
love
him. Everyone who meets him thinks he is adorable and my
neighbors are surprised (and appreciative, I'm sure) that he is not a
barker. He does just fine at home during the day. He greets
us at
the door when we come home from school, a wagging, excited bundle of
joy. But when someone comes to the door, he runs up and
ferociously (hee, hee) barks, defending his territory and us.
I am going to look into the cost of fencing the back yard
this
spring. I have never let him off the leash outside.
I enjoy
gardening and yard work in warm weather and I want him to be able to be
out there with us and have a little
freedom.
So that's the Snuffy update. I hope you are both doing well.

Hi!
Yoda played outside with us for about an hour yesterday then I took him
and Chevelle for a walk. Don't think I tired him out, but it
tired me out.
Joe was making snowballs for him to chase, he loved it. It
was
like he was thinking, cool; I can play with these balls, and eat them!
I went to the vet the other day (without dogs) just to bring
Yoda’s
records so they could start a chart, and I could talk to the
vet.
He had me get a multi vitamin for him for the hip thing. He
said
he would only need them for a bout 3 months. He said that it
was
because of his original owners having him penned up so much.
He
said with the vitamins, and being allowed to run, jump, play, that
those sockets should tighten up nicely--and Yoda loves the vitamins,
thinks he's getting a treat.
Since he likes to talk, I've been trying to get him to sing for me, he
only did it once. Guess I haven't tried the right song.
I just made some copies of his "Happy Ending"
I have kept forgetting to ask you about his front legs, especially his
left one, makes him look so bow-legged. Is that anything to
be
concerned about or will they just always be that way. Is that
another thing of those puppy mills and their lack of care???
Chevelle still won't play, but I think by next week she probably
will. She is so funny how she growls when he wants to play,
but
then she follows him all over.
He is SO GOOD about asking for the door, or knocking on the door if we
don't pay attention right away. The other dogs are being
better
about it too! I think Emma is even sleeping less with him
around. She wants to be sure not to miss out on anything.

Hi,
Yes Gizmo is the king of this castle and Harley knows! :)
Gizmo has
really come out of his shell. He is excited to see me at night he jumps
up and down. He sits with me when ever I'm in my recliner. He sleeps in
the bed by feet every night.
He loves my daughter and the two grandchildren. He really is fitting in
here and I think he loves it here. He has this little game he plays
with me every morning; when we go outside first thing in the morning
for potty break, when he is all done with both duties he runs as fast
as he can to the back patio door. He waits for me to follow him and
then runs real fast around the patio table tempting me to catch him. We
do this about five times and then he is ready to go in. It is too
funny!!!
Talk to you soon,

Hi
Mommy Lois:
I have been such a very good girl. I went to the vet on
Thursday
and I am 10.1 lbs. and doing great! It sure is hard being a
St.
Bernard in such a small body but I am. I am the alpha dog and
the
most special dog of the house. Even when we have other dogs I
rule the house. Yesterday I got a haircut. I go to
Char at
Paws and Claws and love it there. Char told my mom and dad
that I
“shake” on command when she asks to get rid of the excess
fur. My
sister still won’t listen to that command. I even got to go
shopping for some clothes a couple of weeks ago and got a pink shirt
that says “camping princess”, and that I am.
Mom says I am a St. Bernard because I like the bigger dogs and I show
them who is boss, however, the little Lhasa/Poo puppy that comes over
every day, well I don’t like her at all! She is not afraid of
me,
even when I growl at her. I make my mom “hold me” and let the
little pup run around with my sister. Mom still thinks I will
get
used to her and start to play more.
We are sending pictures of some of the dogs that we have romped and
played with. Two just left a little while ago, the Lab/German
Shepard mix (Dayne) and the Sharpei/Red Heeler mix (Lambeau).
Yesterday we also had the puppy (Bailey) that even played with the big
dogs.
Mom has caught me actually playing with some of the dogs, but when I
know she is watching, I quit. I don’t want to let mom know
that I
really do know how to play!!!

Hi
Lois,
Here is another update on Noah. All we can say is.... what a
GREAT pet he is!!! Everyone here loves him. He is
doing
great and seems to be rapidly adjusting. He has been getting
lots
of attention and has really taken to Victoria. He sits with
her,
walks with her and she plays with him outside. He is very
lovable
and really well trained. Although he is on the quiet side he is
becoming more playful. We just came back from our morning
walk
and he was exploring the yard some more, and growling at birds (that is
about the only noise we have heard him make!!!). Anyway, he is fitting
in well with our family and we really appreciate the opportunity to
have him!

I
just had to drop you a quick e-mail before Oreo and I head to bed.
She is a pure delight. The trip home was great. On our first stop she
did all her little potty jobs and took a nice drink of water. Most of
the ride home she slept in my arms. I am so in love with her.
When we stopped for a fast food supper I went in to get the
food while
John walked her. When I came out she lit up like a Christmas tree. It
was almost like she already knew who the "mom" was. I cannot describe
the joy I feel. The hole in my heart is full again.
She has been scurrying about the house sniffing every little corner.
She ate a nice supper including her meds and is now playing with that
little black and white furry thing. I will send photos when I get them
developed.
I cannot thank you enough. You have given me a wonderful gift. This is
a birthday I will long remember. I just know we are going to be very
happy together. (Sure hope we get some sleep tonight.)

Hi
Lois,
I wanted to enclose a picture of our Sandy. I wanted you to
see
him in his comfort zone - on my pillow. Dusty (our other Tzu)
burrows in the covers on Mark's side and Sandy likes to sit on my
pillow which curves in the center for my head.
Sandy has some new friends. He loves to run in circles in the
backyard with our neighbor's 3-year-old Labrador. And then
there
is my friend's 1-year-old female Havanese named Molly who wrestles with
him for hours. Dusty mostly is still just watching Sandy burn
circles around the house. He now walks back and forth in Lake
Superior. Today he actually put his stomach in the water.
Lois, he is just adorable and doing well. He is very good at
work
(now that he knows he cannot jump on the massage table). And he truly
is the main attraction especially at work. I have had to make
my
clients promise not to put either of the dogs on the table when they
are getting ready for a massage. One lady just loves the
company
while she is being massaged. But not everyone or should I say
not
most people. Sandy can jump from the bench onto the massage
table. And if he thinks its okay he will continue and then I
won't be able to bring him to work. Which would not be
fun.
So I am training my clients.
I am also thinking of maybe starting to work with Sandy on an agility
course. He is just so bright and energetic with that tail
that
just keeps going.
Lois, we are having so much fun. Thanks again for all you do.
Laura
p.s. Sandy is also teaching me to pick up after
myself. I
have a habit of leaving my days clothes on the floor
overnight.
Well, Sandy will take my pants under the bed if I leave them
out.
So I am becoming a neater person thanks to Dandy A-go. We are having
fun.
Editor's
note, Sandy was renamed
from Scooter shown on the Happey
Endings 5 page.

Hi
Sandi - just a
note on Sissy's progress.
We are completely pleased with this little honey.
She's a
very happy little girl and we certainly are happy to have her living
with us. She fits in our lifestyle like a hand in a
glove.
She starts her mornings with a 2-mile walk. I worked up to
this
distance gradually but I believe she could even go much further (my
walk is 3-1/2 miles) but I think the 2 miles is sufficient. I
bring her back home and continue my walk. During the course
of
the day she has maybe 3 or 4 more short strolls, when she gets to sniff
everything and explore.
She's a most interested little lady - she doesn't miss anything and
seems to find lots of pleasure in these little jaunts. She
goes
to get the paper with her "dad" at 6:00 A.M. and there's no way he
could leave the house without her. She has become an
excellent
car rider and loves to go. There are times when we have nowhere to go
but just take her for a ride through the park because she loves it so.
Today she went with us to Milwaukee to our son's home and she
just fits
in there so well you'd think she had been going there all her
life. Then when we got home we went to Jim and Amy's (our
other
son in Fond du Lac) for supper and she had fun with her big friend Cody
and the 2 cats.
She's eating well and seems to be perfectly healthy. She's
still
on the antihistamine and is itching much less (but still a
bit).
She was groomed last Wednesday and looks like a million.
Needless
to say we absolutely adore this little girl and we're so happy we were
contacted by your organization. We took Sissy to our local
humane
shelter when we went there to give them a donation and our friends over
there were so happy to see that we had a new little dog to
love.
They thought she was just grand and of course she acted perfect when
she was there.
I've been making her "Sissy treats" and when I do Cody gets a bag
also. He loves them too. By the time evening comes
Sissy is
ready to snuggle down and sleep. Many nights she goes to bed
on
her own before we get in there. I guess her days are so full
she
needs quite a few hours to rejuvenate herself. Again, sorry
for
the length of this e-mail but when I get on Sissy I just can't
stop. We have a computer generated t-shirt place in our mall
and
Rollie took in a picture of Sissy and had it put on a t-shirt for me
with "Sissy" written below it. We certainly thank you people
for
the fine job you do with these homeless dogs - there's certainly a need
out there.
Hope you're enjoying your summer, and look forward to hearing from you.

Hi
Lois,
Thought I'd let you know how the kids are doing. We did decide to
rename them; it's now Toby and Tia. They seem to be learning their new
names fairly quick. They're pretty good about coming when called.
Usually means a treat's waiting.
So far things are going as expected, never a minutes rest for us and
they're just having a ball. Nether one likes to be left alone anywhere;
they constantly follow one of us around the house. And just try to get
up off the couch without them. Toby's really taken to his new sister
well, play, play, and play. Mostly with each other but we're getting to
like toys more each day. They haven't left each other’s side since they
met, everything is done together so training we'll be a little
challenging for them while separated. Potty training is going ok, a few
accidents but so far we've been catching them. Even though she's
younger Tia seems to be the consistent one, he'll learn.
Last night was the first night they both slept all night. The first
three nights it was potty time around 2:00am but looks like we've got
the right recipe now. They were playing until about 9:00 and wanted to
nap (on the couch of course) before bedtime. We bought some steps so
they can get up and down without hurting themselves. Last night they
napped from 7:00 - 8:30, played until 10:00 and then went to bed (after
going outside). Both settled right down and slept until 5:45 this
morning.
Hope all is well, we can't thank you enough for all you do.
Take care,
|

I thought I would update you on Snickers - he is doing wonderful in his
new home. He is absolutely wonderful with the kids and loves
to
play with them and cuddle. He follows me around all the time
and
as soon as I sit down, he is in my lap. He is such a loving
and
sweet dog. He sleeps right next to me in bed.
He does however, not like thunderstorms very much.
We are
going
to try to find out what to do about this for him. He shakes
terribly. He is absolutely the sweetest dog we could have
asked
for and we love him very much. Thanks so much.

Oreo wanted me to drop you a note to tell you she is going to
be

and
advertising here in Eagan.
Oreo went to the groomer yesterday and looks as cute as ever.
On

would have thought that from this little rescue dog we
adopted.
I will be there with her for the entire time we may even have some

pictures
if I can.

Lois,
Just wanted
you to know
that Tucker gets an A+ on my Progress Report. He is such a
great
little
guy. Thank you for rescuing him and letting me adopt
him!
We take
our long walks every day, he has chosen his favorite "spots", is
getting acquainted with the dogs he meets, and is winning the hearts of
the
"humans" he meets.
It
is so uplifting to be greeted by
his happy, excited personality when I get home. He
is comfortable with my leaving for work and
behaves like a little
gentleman in the house when I am gone...not a single "accident" or
destruction act! He makes me laugh every day with his display
of
playfulness and energy. And, his affection and sweetness wins
my
heart. He is definitely "not just a dog", but a
"forever" friend.
Thanks,
Annette and Tucker

Hi
Lois:
Thank
you so much for bringing Trixie, (who we renamed "Hazel") into our
lives. (Our neighbors have a dog named Trixie too, and it was getting
very confusing for both dogs when one or the other of us called that
name. Finally we decided that since the other Trixie was in the
neighborhood first we should change our dog's name. For some reason my
niece thought she looked like a "Hazel" so that's what she became.)
You
were right. . . Hazel is a very sweet little dog. She's also very well
behaved, and she and our other Shih Tzu, Harley, get along wonderfully.
They've become "best buds" who play all the time and are inseparable.
It was really cute to watch them romp in the snow this morning. They
certainly have a lot of energy. . .
If
you'd
like I'll send you a photo of Harley and Hazel in their Christmas
outfits. (Harley will be sporting a Santa cap and Hazel makes an
adorable reindeer.) We tried the outfits on them last night, and Hazel
really thought she was something. She just loves attention.
It's
hard to imagine how anyone could misuse such a nice little animal.
Have
a very Merry Christmas!!!!

I
thought I'd give you a
little update on Sissy, now that it looks like spring is actually
coming.
Due to the extreme cold, snow, and ice, Sissy and I didn't get out
walking as
much this winter as we would have liked - although she has a real
pretty and warm
little coat to wear. Now that we're back out each day, we're
walking
about 2 miles in the morning and another mile in the mid afternoon, and
Sissy
is loving it.
All in all we think
she's very happy in her life with us - she's very healthy and active
and takes
an interest in everything we do - and she's included in almost
everything we
do. The girls at the drive thru at the bank know her and look for
her
when we go thru - many times she gets not one but two treats from
them.
Hardly a day goes by when she doesn't get a ride somewhere. And
she's
just the most lovable and sweet little girl - in the nearly 2 years
we've had
her she has given us nothing but love and joy.
I wish more people
realized how much fun it is to adopt a little older dog - they're so
easy
compared to a puppy and make wonderful pets. Although we have a
wonderful
boarding kennel, Sissy no longer ever has to go there. Our son
and
daughter-in-law's big dog, Cody, and Sissy are the best of friends and
on rare
occasions when we're gone a couple of days, Sissy stays with them, and
we
return the favor with Cody staying with us. We recently had Cody
for a
whole week while his mom and dad were in San Francisco and the two dogs
got
along famously.
I
get e-mails from a
Maltese rescue and every few days there is a new dog they have for
adoption. I was very tempted with a little girl named Bella - 7
years old
and lost her family due to a move. We finally decided that since
everything with Sissy is so perfect, we didn't want to upset her in any
way and
didn't answer the e-mail. I think she enjoys being "only dog"
and whatever Miss Sissy wants, she gets.
Enough
of my
rambling. Just want you to know how thankful we are that we found
you and
you found us. Have a wonderful summer!

Dear Foster Mom,
A
happy Mother’s Day to you! I know I should e-mail you more often, but
my human keeps wasting his time e-Baying and looking up political junk.
I am doing so well in Muskego. In fact, three weeks ago my
human took me into town (Milwaukee) for a groomer appointment. We
stopped in Cudahy and walked past our old house, or so I’m told. But I
didn’t remember it, so I guess I’m really home in Muskego.
I had my physical last month and I’m proud to say I lost 0.4
pounds (and this over the holidays). I really impressed my Vet (and my
Human) with my demeanor. Due to my svelte condition, my vet had trouble
getting a blood sample. It took her three tries, the last with a
tourniquet, but I maintained the attitude of a duchess and never
flinched or complained. I’m happy to say that I’m in great condition.
My humans are well-trained and I take them walking two to
four miles each day. Life is good!! But it’s good, in fact possible,
only because of wonderful and caring moms like you. I thank God for
someone like you who took a miserable life like mine and turned it into
a joy—and made some humans pretty happy besides.
God bless you for the wonderful work you do and, please,
don’t ever lose heart. I have so many other brothers and sisters who
deserve the life you’ve given me.
Thank you and Happy Mother’s Day
Molly, the once and always Duchess of (New) York (Ave)
